We've Secured Year 2 Funding From Optometry Giving Sight
Exciting News! CharisHealth Secures Year 2 Funding from Optometry Giving Sight
We are thrilled to announce that Charis Vision and Health Mission (CharisHealth) has been awarded a second-year grant from Optometry Giving Sight (OGS)!
This continued support will strengthen optometric education at Arthur Jarvis University (AJU) in Akpabuyo, Cross River State, and expand access to critical eye care services across the region.
Why This Work Matters
Across Cross River and neighbouring states—Benue, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, and Ebonyi—over 25 million people face an acute shortage of qualified optometrists. Through this partnership, we are actively training the next generation of eye care professionals while delivering vision services directly to underserved communities.
Key Objectives for Year 2 (Oct 1, 2026—Sept 30, 2027)
Primary Health Integration: Training 50 Primary Health Care (PHC) workers in basic vision screening and early detection, establishing a structured referral pathway to the OGS-equipped AJU Optometry Clinic.
Targeted Health Education: Producing and distributing 1,000+ eye health education materials in both English and the local language—Efik.
Student-Led Advocacy: Mobilizing AJU optometry students to lead public health awareness broadcasts on local FM radio.
Community Outreach: Hosting blindness prevention and sensitization campaigns aligned with major global health dates.
Building Long-Term Sustainability
To ensure lasting impact beyond the grant cycle, Year 2 focuses on:
Embedding primary eye care directly into local government health systems.
Formally incorporating community outreach into the academic curriculum at AJU.
Partnering with local government leaders to foster community ownership.
Sustaining continuous public education campaigns.
A heartfelt thank you to Optometry Giving Sight, our partners, and the entire team for your unwavering commitment. Together, we are bridging the gap in eye care and transforming lives across South-South and South-East Nigeria.
